On October 15th, our 3rd and 4th grade students attended the Mid-Atlantic Episcopal Schools Association’s (MAESA) Episcopal Schools celebration at the Washington National Cathedral. Thirteen area schools attended this student-led service and festival, which included student readers, banner bearers, and singers. Christ Episcopal School was one of the choirs featured. You can listen to our performance of “I Sing a Song of the Saints of God” in the video below (performance begins at 16:15).
This annual celebration promotes collaboration among area Episcopal schools and celebrates the values of an Episcopal education. It was a lovely opportunity to enjoy the magnificence of the cathedral space while worshipping with our peer schools. The Reverend Katie Spero, chaplain at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School gave the homily. Her message centered around love and how we, as Episcopal school students, can spread and increase love in the world.
After the service, Christ Church rector, Father Tim, gave us a quick tour of some beautiful features inside the Cathedral, including the ever-popular Space Window, which contains a piece of moon rock. Special thanks goes to the Cathedral staff who opened the room that holds the National Cathedral LEGO miniature! Once outside, we found another Cathedral favorite: the Darth Vader grotesque (similar to a gargoyle) that sits on one of the Cathedral’s northwest towers. You can learn other fun facts about the Cathedral here.

Once our time exploring the Cathedral was over, we enjoyed a picnic lunch on the lawn before heading back to school. Head of School, Nicole Stone, best summed up the day in a recent newsletter: “Needless to say, it was a joyous day of celebration and discovery.”
